Edmonton Shopping Centre is a comprehensive mixed-use regeneration scheme being developed by St Modwen plc, who acquired Edmonton Green Shopping Centre from London Borough of Enfield in 1999. The site totals 10.7 hectares/26.6 acres and was originally constructed in the late 1960s. The centre comprises of 450,000 sq ft of lettable space made up of 120 retail units, 40 market stalls, 30 community users and 24,000 sq ft of offices.
The core objective for the London Borough of Enfield and St Modwen is to improve the commercial and social aspects of Edmonton Green. The first phase of the £100m regeneration was completed in summer 2007 incorporating the following uses:
- The creation of a new retail concourse with 22 units
- Refurbished Library
- A new bus station
- A new Primary Care Centre
- A new Leisure Centre
- 176 new residential apartments (100% affordable/key worker)
- Refurbished multi storey car park which won “Refurbished Car Park of the Year 2008”
- New purpose built shop-mobility service
- New public toilets in the market square
Construction continued with Phase 2 and the demolition of the old Leisure Centre. In addition to ASDA, this part of the shopping centre will have eight new retail units and 440 more car parking spaces.
Michael Auger, Senior Development Manager for St Modwen, the company leading Edmonton Green’s regeneration, said: “ASDA will bring more people to the area and have some 50,000 visitors per week – another significant step forward in regenerating Edmonton Green.
“It will add to the thriving and varied mix of shops – including new tenant LIDL – market stalls, restaurants, cafés and community facilities here including the bus station, the new Leisure Centre and the Evergreen Primary Care Centre.”
The next steps for Edmonton Green Shopping Centre will be the refurbishment of the shopping malls. St Modwen will be consulting with both retailers and local residents to develop its plans before starting work.
